DIAN - Residency of Diana Duta

In 2022, I spent one month as a resident at AADK, Blanca, Spain, an artist-run platform that develops spaces for research and contemporary creation. With a focus set on experimental processes, its primary interest is to explore the notions of body, territory, and spatiality. Here I developed my own sound practice as DIAN, and I worked on a collection of songs that deal with departures, the presence of absence, the language of inanimate objects and lost folkloric traditions, inspired by the rural landscapes. Two releases are upcoming on the local label Al Darrax in Murcia, Spain and Brussels based label Anterior Insula. Back in Brussels, I have been performing as DIAN in several contexts, for 'a voice message project' hosted by Ines Schärer, at the Médiathèque NGHE in Brussels and at the invitation of Anterior Insula label, during an event at Het Bos, Antwerp, that was also streamed live on We Are Various radio.

During the residency, I would like to continue to collect material and expand my research around the voice as both an object of theoretical reflection and a cultural practice. How can a practice that intertwines humans, non-humans and sound emerge, how can this manifestation of a speculative techno-affective practice be used for voicing the unperceivable? I am interested in the sounds that are specific to Barril de Alva and gathering material in the form of field recordings, notes, and scores to be used in future performances of DIAN.
